Teaching Tip: Parts of Speech Wheel

This is a great, easy group activity for reviewing the parts of speech.

1. Draw a large circle on a large piece of card board.
2. Break the circle up into 8 equal sections with a marker.
3. Write the names of the 8 parts of speech in each section.
4. Place a spinner in the middle of the circle.

For a game spinner stop by your local craft shop or take them off of old board games. Pick a long reading passage and have students travel through the reading identifying the next part of speech that appears on the spinner, as you spin it.

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

I frequently receive calls from pollsters asking me to participate in telephone surveys. One woman began with a barrage of questions.

"Wait a moment," I said. "Who are you and whom do you represent?"

She told me and immediately continued asking questions.

"What's the purpose of this survey?" I asked.

"Sir," she replied irritably, "I don't have time to answer your questions." Then she hung up.

Are Your Students Following Directions?

We wondered this too. That's why we built a guide to following written directions. We have specific resources available for elementary, middle school, and high school teachers. We also have following directions lesson plans and following directions worksheets available. They are great for all subject areas.
