10 Habits of Highly Effective Students ...

As you can tell we have a number of Stephen Covey fans on our staff. Now that we are in school preparation mode, we thought it was a great time to work on ways to help students prepare better and enhance their study skills.

We published "10 Habits of Highly Effective Students" to help teachers develop a list for students to reflect on prior to starting the new year. Give it a read. Did we miss anything?

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

Teaching Tip: Sharing Student Writing

When students share their writing, they begin to think of themselves as authors and it validates their thoughts.

Ways that students can share their writing include:

reading alound in class; submit their work to writing contests; make a big book; read at a school assembly; read to foster grandparents; dictate the writing onto a cassette tape or produce a video tape; design a poster; make a hardbound book and display it in the school library; contribute to a local newspaper; share in the form of a puppet show and through class anthologies. Writing can be shared with large audiences, small groups or one-on-one.

Teaching Tip: How Do You Make Graphing Fun For Kids?

We posed this question to our staff members. The continuous answer we received was to make an activity that relates to their everyday world. It seems like whenever we ask teachers how to make things fun for students, we always receive that answer.

A great example of making graphing fun and relevant is an activity we call "Now That's Using Your Head!" In this activity students compare the size of their head to how high or far they can jump. It is also great because it has a kinesthetic element; students love to move around.

We have really ramped up our graphing section recently. You will find that we not only provide introduction to graphing worksheets, but also reference materials to use while graphing.

You will also find over 30 graphing practice activities on our graphing worksheets page.

Don't forget to check out our complete step-by-step graphing curriculum available in our ultimate graphing series.

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

Although we were being married in New Hampshire, I wanted to add a touch of my home state, Kansas, to the wedding. My fiancee, explaining this to a friend, said that we were planning to have wheat rather than rice thrown after the ceremony.

Our friend thought for a moment. Then he said solemnly, "It's a good thing she's not from Idaho."
