Teaching Tip: Help Students Improve Their Study Skills

Looking to help your students to excel? Of course, we all are working hard to do this. We often overlook the importance of study skills. Many students go all the way through their primary and secondary career never actually taking the time to discover how they personally can best prepare for a test or exam.

We took a quick poll around here and found that more than 65% of our staff members did not feel confident in their ability to prepare for exams until they were in college. We asked them why? The most common answer was that they failed to realize that studying actually was a skill.

Here are some quick ways you can help students work on their student skills:

1. Every time you meet with students parents and guardians discuss students study routines and suggest was to improve it.

2. Help students discover what learning styles work best for individual students.

3. Share some basic test taking strategies with students.

4. Have students use visuals and graphic organizers to help solidify concepts.

5. Take approximately one hour of class time to help students learn how to study.

If you currently don't take the time to work on study skills you should definitely consider it. Here is an example of how taking time with study skills can be a game changer. Tracy one of our staff members is a middle school teacher. At the beginning of the year she identified that 7 of her 34 students were struggling. This was based on many criteria. We then recommended that Tracy take a day to help students form a personalized study skills plan. Two months later, she can only identify one student as struggling.

We finally released all of our Preschool through grade 8 math curriculum. This includes detailed step-by-step worksheets and lessons for students. We covered all the national math standards and then some. Members can download everything now.

Take a quick listen to what Tara Myers (Virginia Beach, VA) had to say: "The new math section you guys posted this week is unbelievable! It far surpasses the current math curriculum we are using here (Meadows School District). I never knew that we were not covering that many of the National Math Standards at Grade 3. I counted 73 standards that we are missing; just at 3rd grade. I'm recommending that our district follows your curriculum next year. What a contribution you made!"

Take a look at skills covered at each grade level:
