Teaching Tip: Five Rubric Tips To Remember
By: Teachnology Staff

A rubric is simply a set of guidelines that are clearly drawn up prior to evaluating just about anything. With concise guidelines in hand; it really makes the expectations of the task, process, or product very clear to students. As a result teachers, students, and parents are more comfortable with what is being evaluated. If you are not using rubrics regularly, we highly recommend them. Here 5 easy tips to keep in mind the next time you create or use a rubric.

1. Anticipate all the expected outcomes before you begin developing a rubric.
2. Decide if you will be using a holistic or analytical rubric. Holistic rubrics are great for evaluating whole bodies of work.
3. Decide on how many points or gradation levels you will have. The traditional rubric uses a four point scale.
4. The rubric must be written in language the students clearly understand.
5. Test out the rubric and make adjustments, if needed.

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

The small-town doctor was famous in the area for always catching VERY large fish.

One day while he was on one of his frequent fishing trips he got a call that a woman at a neighboring farm was giving birth. He rushed to her aid and delivered a healthy baby boy.

The farmer had nothing to weigh the baby with so the doctor used his fishing scale.

The baby weighed in at 32 pounds, 10 ounces.
