Teaching Tip: African American History Month Projects

Here are some ideas for incorporating African American History Month in your classroom.

1. Build a walk through time mural.
2. Perform skits of important moments in the civil rights movement.
3. Create a African American History Month ABC book. Use each letter of the alphabet to commemorate a person, event, or idea.
4. Write letters of nomination for honoring African-American heroes.
5. Discuss whether Dr. Martin Luther King Junior's dream came true.
6. Discuss when were you treated unfairly.
7. Examine the concept of a fact versus an opinion.
8. Examine Georgia, Dr. King's home state.
9. Make Civil Rights "Now" and "Then" Venn diagrams.
