Jokes You Can Tell in Class

The teacher of the earth science class was lecturing on map reading. After explaining about latitude, longitude, degrees and minutes the teacher asked, "Suppose I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude...?"

After a confused silence, a voice volunteered, "I guess you'd be eating alone."

Keeping It Simple

Being a teacher does not end at 3pm. It is an ever-engaging career. Many times we can't find enough time in the morning or during the day. to put our all into our each lesson.

Here are some simple changes you can make to speed your day:

1. Use Rubrics More - Rubrics really clarify the expectations for both students and teachers. Show the students the rubric before they begin on the task they will be evaluated on.

2. Realize That You Don't Have To Reinvent the Wheel - When planning your lesson make sure to check our Lesson Plans Center. Get ideas and even whole lessons from teacher tested plans.

3. Use Forms and Templates - Use forms to help you record routines. These can be used to monitor students that leave the classroom and even behavior.

4. Create Checklist for Yourself - We spend much of our day just trying to figure out what we need to do next. Why not create a daily checklist for yourself.

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my four-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds.

She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs.

One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, "The tooth fairy will never believe this!"

November Is Back To Basics for Teachers

November is the first month of the school year when students start to believe they can slack off. Since this is very common, how do we keep them headed in right direction? Simple, remind them of the basics. Go back over your rules, remind them of study skills, review the daily routine that they should have down by now. For some students this will be a waste of their time. For others this reminder will be paramount.

Here are some resources to help you bring your class back to basics:

Following Directions - Will make sure students are thoroughly reading.

Graphic Organizers - Great resources for visual cues.

Graphing - Perfect pivotal skills for all grade levels. Reading graphs become more important.

How To Study - This is the most important skill your student can learn.

Detailed Learning Styles Inventory - Very helpful for teachers and students.
