Teachers: Math Field Trips? Jenny from Marcus Heights Middle School wanted to know if we could recommend some math field trips for her school. Sure - we can give you a few ideas. It all depends on your area of focus. |
For geometry, take your students to a deck construction site. Have your students check the plans. General stores, a restaurant, or grocery store are fantastic. For statistics, take them to a baseball game. To study, basic calculations, train stations or airports are fantastic. Want to really put them to the test? Take students to a factory and have them brainstorm on methods the plants could use to increase production. Plan follow up activities for after a field trip. The trip should not be an isolated event, but should be incorporated into you curriculum. Students can journal, write story problems for math, or research animals or plants they saw on the trip. |
