Teaching Tip: Solving a Misunderstanding

To help students understand how easily misunderstood someone can be, play the sailing game. Have students make a waterway. Some students can be the banks, some boats in the river, and some rocks and logs in the river. Blindfold a student and have him stand at one end of the waterway. He is the boat. Have another student stand at the other end of the waterway. He is the captain. He has to guide the boat through the waterway using only his words. Boats do not talk so the blindfolded student cannot ask any questions. Students find that it is very difficult to communicate exactly what you want to say.

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

When my mother was called for jury duty, she felt confident of her ability to answer the questions asked of prospective jurors.

As a young attorney, I had filled her in on what to expect.

Asked about the occupations of family members, Mom answered, "My son is a lawyer."

As a follow-up, she was asked if she had ever used the services of an attorney.

"Only to mow my lawn."
