Teaching Tip: Always Use the Writing Process
By: Eric, Elementary School Teacher: Sydney, Australia

I always use 5 steps to writing when teaching children how to complete a writing assignment.
1. Pre-Writing: gather ideas for writing on any given topic from experience, past knowledge, discussions about the topic.
2. Drafting: write what they think is important and should be included.
3. Revising: check the draft and decide what stays and what goes.
4. Editing: check for spelling, punctuation; and other mechanical considerations.
5. Publication: prepare the final copy. During the final step, students share their writing with an audience of choice.

Always peer review work using writing rubrics.Following these five steps will help students write more effectively and appreciate what they produce.

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

"Hello Mrs. Miller," said the bearded guy behind the counter at the bagel shop.

My husband and I looked at him but drew complete blanks.

"I'm sorry, do we know each other?" I asked.

"Yeah, you was my English teacher."

Leaning over, my husband whispered, "Good job, Honey, good job."

What Are Teachers Saying About TeAchnology?

Have you seen our Types of Writing Series? We were challenged two months ago by Principal Rick Miller of Adams Middle School. Rick's school has a site license with us. He asked if we could work and expand our writing area to thoroughly cover the various types of writing. Rick was sent the first copy. He just wrote us last week. "First you got our attention with your grammar and vocabulary sections. Now Teachnology does it again! My Language Arts teachers are totally loving it. I shared it with our elementary and high school Language Arts directors. You got the same reaction. It's like I have my own textbook company! Usually we only complain about educational supplies. You changed that. Thanks again."
