Have students write a letter to one of their favorite characters. It works even better if you have them frame their ideas by using a graphic organizer. You can also use scenario based writing prompts. I often ask students to write a letter to characters as if the character was coming to live with them. If you are studying authors or genres, you can also have students write to authors. This year I had students write to Ernest Hemingway. This activity really helps students open up their minds.
