Teachers: Math Field Trips?

Jenny from Marcus Heights Middle School wanted to know if we could recommend some math field trips for her school. Sure - we can give you a few ideas. It all depends on your area of focus.

For geometry, take your students to a deck construction site. Have your students check the plans. General stores, a restaurant, or grocery store are fantastic. For statistics, take them to a baseball game. To study, basic calculations, train stations or airports are fantastic. Want to really put them to the test? Take students to a factory and have them brainstorm on methods the plants could use to increase production.

Plan follow up activities for after a field trip. The trip should not be an isolated event, but should be incorporated into you curriculum. Students can journal, write story problems for math, or research animals or plants they saw on the trip.

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

The test I gave my math class covered everything we'd studied all year -- fractions, percentages and portions of whole units.

But maybe I could have explained things better. To the question "What portion of a foot is six inches?"

One student answered, "The toes?"

You Have To See These Pictures...

We just wanted to share some fun pictures that teachers from all over the world have sent into us this year. It all started with a little Kenny (the son of one of our writers). You have to see little Kenny. He is just under a year old and spelling huge words already.

A few days later Diane from New Hampshire sent us a picture of what she found in the parking lot this week. A few weeks ago Mrs. Beemer's third grade send us another photo of fun this time in the sun. And then we found this on the beach during Spring break.
