How Do You Bring a Number Line to Life?

Use a measuring tape to help students practice addition and subtraction.
They can put on finger on the starting number and move their other finger
up or down the tape. This will help them visualize where the numbers
fall and help get them ready to add and subtract in the abstract.

Teaching Tip: Help Students Improve Their Study Skills

Make sure to check out our Study Skill Center

Looking to help your students really excel this semester? We all work hard, but often overlook the importance of study skills. Many students go all the way through their primary and secondary grades never actually taking the time to discover how they personally can best prepare for a test or exam.

We took a quick poll around here and found that more than 65% of our staff members did not feel confident in their ability to prepare for exams until they were in college. We asked them why? The most common answer was that they failed to realize that studying actually was a skill.

There you'll find quick ways you can help students work on their study skills:

1. Every time you meet with the student's parents and guardians discuss the child's study routines and suggest ways to improve them.

2. Help students discover what learning styles work best for their individual needs.

3. Share some basic test taking strategies with students.

4. Use Graphic Organizers to help solidify concepts.

5. Take approximately one hour of class time to help students learn how to study.

If you currently don't take the time to work on study skills you should definitely consider it. Here is an example of how taking time with study skills can be a game changer. Tracy one of our staff members is a middle school teacher. At the beginning of the year she identified that 7 of her 34 students were struggling. This was based on many criteria. We then recommended that Tracy take a day to help students form a personalized study skills plan. Two months later, she can only identify one student as struggling.

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

While waiting at the veterinarian's office, I overheard two women chatting about their dogs.

"What's your dog's name?" asked the first woman.

"Well, we used to call her Pork Chop," answered the second lady. "But after the vet bills we've had for her, we now call her Filet Mignon."

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

A doctor received an emergency call from a patient.

She had a fly in her ear. He suggested an old home remedy. "Pour warm olive oil into your ear and lie down for a few minutes," he said. "When you lift your head the fly should emerge with the liquid."

The patient thought that sounded like a good idea, but she still asked, "Into which ear should I pour the oil?"

Teaching Tip: How Do You Make Graphing Fun For Kids?

We posed this question to our staff members. The continuous answer we received was to make an activity that relates to their everyday world. It seems like whenever we ask teachers how to make things fun for students, we always receive that answer.

A great example of making graphing fun and relevant is an activity we call "Now That's Using Your Head!" In this activity students compare the size of their head to how high or far they can jump. It is also great because it has a kinesthetic element; students love to move around.

We have really ramped up our graphing section recently. You will find that we not only provide introduction to graphing worksheets, but also reference materials to use while graphing.

You will also find over 30 graphing practice activities on our graphing worksheets page.

Don't forget to check out our complete step-by-step graphing curriculum available in our ultimate graphing series.
