Teachers & Parents: Our Work Helped A 10 Year-Old Catch Up! What Can It Do For You?

This week we received a message from Pam Michaels. Pam's ten year old daughter Samantha has a degenerative nerve disease that causes her hours upon hours of agonizing pain. Last year she missed an entire school year while battling this disease. She has made a great deal of medical progress and has been pain free since June, but she found herself a year behind in all areas. Math is a difficult subject for Samantha. Pam started giving Samantha two assignments from our website a week, in addition to her regular homework. Pam writes, "Samantha has thrived using your program! I can't believe it! She has caught up due to your program, and in record time I might add! Not only that; she has asked to keep doing your program because she wants to try honors math next year! This is coming from a kid who used to do everything to avoid 3 problems of math a night. You guys are on to something with your program! Thanks! - Pam"

March Is The Month Of Teacher Observations...

March can be one of the longest months of the year for teachers. It seems like the month where most of us run out of ideas and are looking for new activities. It also is the month of Teacher Observations. Most educational administrators report that most teacher observations occur on this month. A few things that can help you on any observation are organization and differentiated instruction. Remember that some observers will ask to see your emergency lesson plans. Have them on hand. We have a number of things that can help:

Teachers: What is a Math Do Now? How Can It Speed Up Your Day?

Last week Amanda Hunt, a teacher from Gainesville, Florida, asked us to explain how we use "Do Nows" in our classes. We thought it was a perfect question to share with everybody. A "Do Now" is simply a task that you give to students to work on independently with no or minimal teacher interaction. It's simply a super small quiz. We like to give them at the beginning of every class. It should review skills that students learned the day prior. We tend to aim for three questions that should take a maximum of 5 minutes. It helps students focus at the start of class and provides a quick assessment. Many of our teachers have this either count as part of the student's homework grade or even have it replace homework entirely.

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

Before going on vacation, I went to a tanning salon. I was under the lights so long that the protective goggles I wore left a big white circle around each eye.

Gazing at myself in the mirror the next day, I thought, "Man, I look like a clown."

I had almost convinced myself that I was over-reacting until I got in line at the grocery store. I felt a tug at my shirt and looked down to see a toddler staring up at me.

He asked, "Are you giving out balloons?"

Math Worksheets and Helpers For Teachers

1. Math Skills     |     2. Math Grade Levels     |     3. Math Helpers     |     4. Math Timesavers

Students and Homework?

Math is one of those subjects where homework is a pinnacle of improvement. For years teachers and parents have been racking their brain trying to figure this one out. Here is a great idea Sheila, one of our writers, started using in her class last year. We all quickly adapted it to our classes when she saw her success. The first thing to do is take photos of the students. Now create a chart on your wall with the students' pictures on top. Then use them as responsible sticker charts. Give small stickers for participation, preparedness, class construction, behavior, homework completion. Then everyday when students come to class comes in make sure the charts with pictures are ordered by rank (most to least stickers). You can give a reward for the top 5 each week. This really motivates students. For some reason seeing their picture really helps it sink in.

Teaching Tip: February Lesson Plan Ideas

Looking for some great ideas to include the theme of February in your lessons? We have a bunch.

1. February is African American History Month. Here are some lesson ideas.

2. February 2nd is Ground Hog Day.

3. February 4th is Rosa Park's birthday.

4. February 5th is Weatherman's Day. With most of North America experiencing a dry winter why not have students predict and track the weather? Then compare to the actual results. This can be a writing piece or a scientific method activity.

5. February 11th is National Inventors' Day. Perfect time for a science fair.

6. February 14th is Valentine's Day - We have 60 lesson ideas for you.

7. February 18th is Presidents' Day - See our Presidents' Day guide.

8. February is Love Your Pets Month - Have students write a thank you letter to their pets. More ideas can be found here.

9. February is American Heart Month.

10. Superbowl Sunday - include a football themed game to review your content. Each correct answer is worth 10 yards. An incorrect answer is a turn over. Make 10 slots on your board and break the class into 2 teams.

Jokes You Can Tell in Class

As a professional animal trainer, I was disturbed when my own dog developed a bad habit. Every time I hung my wash out on the clothesline, she would yank it down.

Drastic action was called for.

I put a white kitchen towel on the line and waited. Each time she pulled it off, I scolded her. After two weeks the towel was untouched. Then I hung out a large wash and left to do some errands.

When I came home, my clean clothes were scattered all over the yard. On the line was the white kitchen towel.
